Recently O’meara Ford in Denver was blasted online by a self proclaimed SEO for having ‘fake reviews,’ aSEO who most likely was denied and rightfully so. A typical move within the search engine marketing arena is to blast the one who decides not to hire you. Now, I don’t know if this is the case or not but 9 out of 10 times it is which is why as a consumer should you see a ‘SEO Company‘ blasting a business on their personal or company blog should be a red flag from the start.
O’meara Ford – if this individual solicited you and you decided not to hire them – good for you.
WHAT REALLY QUALIFIES AN SEO?
The SEO industry is unregulated and it seems that more often than not an individual who has no true development skills and/or knows how to install a basic WordPress template and blast a few links to it automatically becomes a “SEO Expert.”
In order to be considered a ‘true SEO Expert’ you have to have the working and developmental understanding of not only what types of technology does what, but how. For an example it’s nice that WordPress makes it easy to write nice URLs but my guess is 90% of the self proclaimed SEO Experts in the industry have no idea what something like mod_rewrite is and/or how to manually configure a serve and website for better URLs.
If you’re considering on hiring a SEO Company look at their portfolio and don’t be afraid to ask them a few technical questions. If the SEO can’t answer just as many and/or have just as much knowledge as your web developer you should probably look elsewhere.
Last but not least – if the SEO company who is soliciting you has a website that looks like their 4th grader put it together – they probably did.
When in doubt you can always check out the Association of Ethical SEOs. These are all SEO companies who have passed the technical understanding of search engine optimization and not just basic knowledge on link building and configuring a WordPress template.
