Inside the mind of an Amateur SEO
I had a conversation a week or so ago with a really nice gal who was under the impression that Google ranked her ‘SEO LOVE” based upon a measuring tool called, Page Rank. I muted the phone, had a good laugh and returned to the conversation in shock and awe.
Apparently Search Engine Optimizers in not only Colorado but all over the world are telling business owners that Google Tool Bar Page Rank is a direct reflection of how their SEO campaign is progressing. So, why would a SEO tell a business owner SEO progress is a reflection of SEO? Easy, here’s why…
Let’s say Joe Schmo’s SEO Company was hired by some other Schmo’s Vitamin House. This particular company has had a website for over 10 years and has collected various links over time therefore giving it a pretty good link authority in Google, also known as Page Rank.
Joe Schmo’s SEO Company is hired for the job. They know that Schmo’s Vitamin House doesn’t know anything about SEO so they change a few title tags around and decide to give the owner of Schmo’s a quick tutorial on installing the Google Tool Bar… Once this has been done they might even show them some of their competitors who might have a newer website and lower Page Rank then brag about their ‘mad crazzy seo skillz‘ and how their company is off to SEO Bliss… yet the business owner wonders why their ‘organic’ traffic (if they even know what that is…) hasn’t gone up.
Make sense? This tactic makes the business owner feel educated about SEO as well as feel good about how their SEO campaign is running while it installs a sense of false hope with the business owner.
This particular scenario actually happened and the business owner to-date still has no idea what’s going on. They brag about their Page Rank yet scratch their head when looking at their Anaytics… Perhaps they are waiting for something to happen? Welp, it’s going to be a long wait.
So does having a higher Google Tool Bar Page Rank really mean better SEO?
Negative… for those who are unfamiliar with Page Rank it’s basically what Google uses to define link authority or trust. Now the exact definition has changed over time as Google has revolutionized and at one point, Google Page Rank was an important factor to look at to determine how your website was doing which is no longer the case.
If you have found yourself with a Search Engine Optimizer who preaches about Page Rank and tries to persuade your SEO factors are based on Page Rank – fire them.
