“Sean Hakes, Inc,
I have a problem and I am hoping you can shed some light on it. I think I already know what your answer is going to be but I thought I would at least ask to avoid any conflicts.
I hired a friend of mine to manage my company website which they have been doing for years. The website looks good, not top notch, but good, my only concern is the website isn’t performing as good as I’d like and I really think I need to hire an outside agency to help promote my website through SEO.
My problem is this: I really like the person I hired to do my website and I don’t want to hurt their feelings. What should I do?
Thanks,
A Business Owner
Does this sound like a similar problem?
Believe it or not Mr. Business owner… many times owners / managers like you hire a friend, family member or someone else you have some personal tie to that makes you feel like you’re obligated to use them for everything web related and if you don’t your sure you will hurt their feelings.
Get over it… you have a business to run and as any business owner should know one of the biggest mistakes business owners do is mix business with personal feelings.
Ask yourself what kind of reflection your website has with potential clients… what I mean is does your website look like your 3rd grade nephew designed it? If so, that is a direct reflection on how serious your take your business.
First – “ASK!”
Ask other professionals what they truly think about your website in comparison to your competitions website. Ask them to be honest with you. Don’t ask family members, don’t ask fellow employees believe or not they will say what they think you want to hear vs. what you should be hearing.
Ask other web developers to look at your websites code… ask them to give you real feedback on what they would change to make it a better working website and most importantly a website that converts visitors into sales – not chase them off to your competitors who have a better looking website that tells them they take business serious – not you.
Second – take the “plunge!”
Guess what… you’re a business owner and with that come smart decisions and the need to weed out feelings with business. You’re going to have to break your personal web designers heart… If your website needs something that they can’t offer you’re going to need to make an executive decision and if that decision is to hire an outside agency to fix, repair or enhance what they have done – it will be a decision you won’t regret. Business is business right?
